Classic Car Insurance in New Jersey

You've invested a lot of time and money into your classic car, so why risk not having it protected?

If your vehicle is classified as historic or classic, or you feel you are able to get this classification, then it may be eligible for classic car insurance. Why not just go with a regular car insurance policy? Well, for one thing, a classic car policy is often more affordable because the vehicle is not used as frequently. It's also worth pointing out that regular auto insurance policies may not cover the specific maintenance or older car parts needed to fix a classic vehicle.

At Sloan Insurance Agency in the Elmer, NJ area, we're here to help classic car owners across Southern New Jersey (and beyond) get the coverage they need. Keep reading to learn more.

What Does Classic Car Insurance Cover?

Classic car insurance policies vary, often depending on the type of the car itself, its use and how much it is valued. However, some general things that many classic policies cover include:

  • Roadside Assistance (in the event of an accident or a breakdown)
  • Total Loss Vehicle Replacement
  • Auto Show Liability Costs
  • Travel Coverage Costs (if the vehicle is involved in an accident or a breakdown on a trip)
  • Replacement Parts

It's important to talk with your insurance agent about specific coverages you may need for your vehicle and what you are looking for in a policy.

New Jersey's Classic Car Laws

Just because a car is old doesn't automatically make it a classic or "vintage" car. Like most states, New Jersey has its own laws regarding this classification. For a car to be classified as a historic or classic vehicle in the Garden State, it must be at least 25 years old. It also cannot be used for everyday transportation use. Instead, only 25+ vehicles that are used for exhibition or other special purposes (like education) can achieve this classification.

Special historic car plates can be added for an extra fee on top of regular registration costs. However, it's the historic registration itself that you need in order to qualify as a classic vehicle.
